If you’ve tried to get passthrough working on a PCVR rig for virtual reality porn, you’ve probably hit a wall at some point in the process — this guide will explain what’s actually possible and why. Some PCVR headsets can do a limited form of passthrough through DeoVR. But the full experience — colour, AI passthrough, alpha-packed content — is standalone-only. Understanding why requires a quick look at how the pipeline actually works.

Every VR headset falls into one of two categories, and the difference goes deeper than wireless vs tethered.
Standalone headsets — Quest 3, Quest 3S, Pico 4 Ultra, Samsung Galaxy XR — are self-contained computers. They run their own Android-based operating system. Apps install and run directly on the device. The OS owns every hardware component, including the front-facing cameras.
PCVR headsets — Valve Index, Pimax, the older Oculus Rift — are display-and-tracking peripherals. Your PC does the rendering. The headset sends sensor data to the PC; the PC sends rendered frames back to the headset’s display. Strip away the firmware and what you have is a high-quality monitor with gyroscopes.
This is the entire reason passthrough works on one category and not the other.

On a standalone headset, the passthrough chain is clean and self-contained:
Every step runs on the same device. The OS owns the hardware; the app talks to the OS; the OS hands over the camera data. Nothing leaves the headset.
The left chain works because the app and the camera API live on the same device. The right chain breaks because the app is on a different machine entirely.
Some PCVR headsets do have camera access through their VR runtime — the Valve Index and Pimax Crystal both expose a passthrough API that DeoVR can call. So passthrough isn’t impossible on PCVR. But it comes with hard limits baked into the hardware:
So the experience works — a performer appears in your space — but the image around her is monochrome, setup takes more effort, and you’re limited to green screen content only. The AI passthrough feature that SexLikeReal uses to convert regular VR scenes into passthrough content isn’t available here.
PCVR headsets without camera API access (most of them) can’t do any form of passthrough through streaming apps, for the same architectural reason as before: the streaming app runs on Windows, not on the headset, and has no path to the camera data.
Yes. And passthrough still won’t work in that mode.
When you use a Quest via Link cable or Air Link, the streaming app runs on your PC — not on the Quest. You’re in PCVR mode. The Quest’s cameras and Android OS are sidelined. The device is functioning as a display peripheral with tracking.
The fix is straightforward: install DeoVR, PLAY’A VR, or HereSphere directly on the Quest through the standalone app store. Launch them without Link connected. Passthrough works immediately. The PC doesn’t need to be involved at all for passthrough content.
Which streaming apps are available natively on each standalone headset is covered in the best VR headsets for porn guide — including the one gap: HereSphere is PCVR-only on Pico 4 Ultra.
The Valve Index and Pimax Crystal both expose their camera feed to DeoVR via SteamVR’s camera API. Setup is manual — you configure chroma key removal yourself in the app — but it does work. What you get is a black and white room with a composited performer in it. For some users that’s fine; for others the monochrome background kills immersion.
PLAY’A VR doesn’t support passthrough on PCVR headsets — it’s standalone only. HereSphere likewise. So on the Index and Crystal, DeoVR is your only option for passthrough content.
Other PCVR headsets — including most Pimax models outside the Crystal — don’t expose camera data to PC applications at all, which means no passthrough route regardless of whether cameras are physically present.
| Headset | Passthrough type | App support | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quest 3 / 3S (standalone) | Full colour | DeoVR, PLAY’A VR, HereSphere | All methods: AI, alpha, chroma key |
| Quest 2 (standalone) | Full colour | DeoVR, PLAY’A VR | |
| Quest Pro (standalone) | Full colour | DeoVR, PLAY’A VR | |
| Pico 4 (standalone) | Full colour | DeoVR | |
| Pico 4 Ultra (standalone) | Full colour | DeoVR, PLAY’A VR | HereSphere PCVR only, no passthrough |
| Samsung Galaxy XR | Full colour | DeoVR (via Hub, browser) | |
| Valve Index (PCVR) | Black & white | DeoVR only | Chroma key only, manual setup |
| Pimax Crystal (PCVR) | Black & white | DeoVR only | Chroma key only, manual setup |
| Apple Vision Pro | Blocked | — | Hardware capable; Apple blocks adult app API access |
| Other PCVR headsets | None | — | No camera API exposed to streaming apps |
The Vision Pro sits apart from the PCVR issue entirely. The hardware is technically capable — excellent passthrough cameras, powerful onboard chip, streaming apps exist for visionOS. The problem is a deliberate policy decision: Apple has blocked adult apps from accessing the passthrough API.
DeoVR runs in browser only on Vision Pro. PLAY’A VR has no passthrough support. The headset that could deliver the best passthrough experience available is locked down at the software level. The hardware limitation isn’t engineering — it’s politics.
This is covered fully in both the passthrough VR porn explainer and the headsets guide, alongside the full app compatibility breakdown for each device.
You own a Valve Index or Pimax Crystal: You can do chroma key passthrough in DeoVR — black and white room, manual green screen setup, no AI passthrough. It works. For the full colour experience and access to AI-processed content, you’d need a standalone headset alongside your rig. You own any other PCVR headset: Passthrough isn’t possible through any streaming app. A Quest 3S is the lowest-cost route to the full experience.
You own a Quest and use it via Link: Install DeoVR, PLAY’A VR, or HereSphere directly on the Quest. Launch in standalone mode. Done. Once you’re set up, the best passthrough VR porn sites guide covers every platform worth subscribing to.
You’re considering Apple Vision Pro: The passthrough is blocked by policy, not hardware. Don’t buy it for passthrough porn — buy it for other reasons if you’re so inclined.
You’re choosing a first headset specifically for passthrough: The what is passthrough VR porn guide covers everything about the experience, the production format, and which platforms carry the content. For a direct hardware comparison, the headsets guide ranks them side by side.
One more factor worth mentioning: all the standalone headsets that support passthrough — Quest 3, Quest 3S, Pico 4 Ultra, Samsung Galaxy XR — also support AV1 hardware decoding. That means better streaming quality at the same data rate on platforms like SexLikeReal. Apple Vision Pro, notably, does not support AV1.
For an understanding of where passthrough technology goes beyond flat 2D video — specifically the 3D volumetric format where you can physically walk around a performer — the 2D passthrough vs 3D volumetric comparison explains what Gaussian Splatting brings to the table, and which headsets can handle it.
